Questions about children
1My son speaks terribly loud - especially when he comes home from nursery school. Perhaps his hearing is bad?
Children often speak loudly when they come home from a noisy place. But after a while they should lower their voices - perhaps you need to tell your child to do so several times. If you think it has become a general problem, you should talk to your family doctor about it. It might just be caused by earwax, or perhaps your son needs surgery for cholesteatoma of the ear. Children often suffer from ear problems, especially during the winter, without suffering permanent hearing loss. But do not neglect a hearing problem. Very often something can and should be done, so you should consult your family doctor.

2My daughter says "excuse me" all the time. Is it just a bad habit, or is it because she cannot hear properly?
Very often it is a bad habit, but it could also be a hearing problem. You should talk to you daughter about it and ask her if she has problems at school or when she is with her friends. If it persists, you should take her to your family doctor.
3When my children are playing in their room, I can hear my daughter very clearly. She is often speaking loudly to my son and she keeps repeating words over and over again. Do you think my son has a hearing problem?
Children often talk loudly when repeatedly explaining words or small sentences to each other. This is quite normal. But it could also be a hearing problem. If you think there is a pattern, you should consult your family doctor.
4My daughter has had inflammation on her middle ear several times. Will her hearing be damaged?
If a child repeatedly suffers inflammations on the middle ear, the ears often become more vulnerable. This includes an increased risk of hearing loss later on. It is impossible to say if your daughter's hearing will be damaged, but the risk is greater.

5This is the fifth time my daughter has had to have surgey for cholesteatoma of the ear. Will her hearing become damaged?
Thousands of children have surgery for cholesteatoma of the ear and it is often a great help. It is also a fact that ears become more vulnerable after a small operation like this. Many children will undergo several operations over a period of time. It is not possible to say if their hearing will become damaged, but the risk of hearing loss later on is greater when compared to the risk among children who have experienced no early problems with their ears.
6The teacher keeps telling me that my son is not concentrating at school. Is it possible that he has a hearing problem?
It is difficult to say. Try to think back - is it only at school that he cannot hear or is it also at home or when he is together with his friends? What about the television - does he like to turn it up so that it becomes too loud for others? If you believe that he also has difficulties hearing when he is not at school, you should consult your family doctor.
7Sometimes it seems as if my daughter is constantly daydreaming. Is it possible that she has a hearing problem?
This could be caused by many things and bad hearing could be one of them. Try to think back...
8My son is receiving special training at school, and he is very pleased with it. When I ask him what he likes most, he says: the silence. Does he have a hearing problem?
School can be very noisy so it is understandable that he prefers the silence. Have you noticed that he is sensitive to noise in general? If so, you should consult a doctor. He could be suffering from a hearing problem.
9It seems as if my little daughter is not always able to locate where a particular sound comes from. Does she suffer from bad hearing?
Your daughter might have a hearing problem if she is not able to locate sounds. You should consult a doctor.
10My son has speech disorders. Is it possible that he suffers from bad hearing?
There are many reasons for speech disorders. Bad hearing is one of them. I think you should take your son to a doctor.
11I have to shout to my son when he is at the playground. Does he have a hearing problem?
Children are often in a world of their own when they play. Have you noticed that he has difficulties hearing in other situations? If yes, his hearing might be the reason, and you should take him to a doctor.
12My daughter often complains about being tired and having a headache when she comes home from school. Could it be a hearing problem?
It is hard to say. Being at school can be stressful because of the noise. Sometimes, this can lead to headaches and tiredness. But if she often feels unwell, you should consult a doctor. It may be a hearing problem.
