CONCLUSIONS
The preliminary findings of this study suggest that non-linear frequency compression has the potential to substantially improve acquisition and identification of high-frequency speech signals and environmental sounds compared to conventional high-end digital amplification. This type of full-time access to inputs across the entire speech range is critical for developing age-appropriate speech,  language, and auditory skills. It is possible that using NLFC can enable young children to overcome many of the deficits that have been found in children with mild to moderate hearing loss. In the future, we will compare performance with the study aid between the  NLFC enabled and disabled conditions and we will seek to identify parameters that influence the benefit children with moderate hearing loss receive from NLFC. For now, we conclude that NLFC should be considered as an option for children with mild to moderately severe hearing loss.

Evaluation of nonlinear frequency compression for school-age children with moderate to moderately severe hearing loss.Wolfe J, John A, Schafer E, Nyffeler M, Boretzki M, Caraway T.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: Previous research has indicated that children with moderate hearing loss experience difficulty with recognition of high-frequency speech sounds, such as fricatives and affricates. Conventional behind-the-ear (BTE) amplification typically does not provide ample output in the high frequencies (4000 Hz and beyond) to ensure optimal audibility for these sounds.

PURPOSE: To evaluate nonlinear frequency compression (NLFC) as a means to improve speech recognition for children with moderate to moderately severe hearing loss.

RESEARCH DESIGN: Within subject, crossover design with repeated measures across test conditions.

STUDY SAMPLE: Fifteen children, aged 5-13 yr, with moderate to moderately severe high-frequency sensorineural hearing loss were fitted with Phonak Nios, microsized, BTE hearing aids. These children were previous users of digital hearing aids and communicated via spoken language. Their speech and language abilities were age-appropriate.

DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS: Aided thresholds and speech recognition in quiet and in noise were assessed after 6 wk of use with NLFC and 6 wk of use without NLFC. Participants were randomly assigned to counter-balanced groups so that eight participants began the first 6 wk trial with NLFC enabled and the other seven participants started with NLFC disabled. Then, the provision of NLFC was switched for the second 6 wk trial. Speech recognition in quiet was assessed via word recognition assessments with the University of Western Ontario (UWO) Plural Test and recognition of vowel-consonant-vowel nonsense syllables with the Phonak Logatome test. Speech recognition in noise was assessed by evaluating the signal-to-noise ratio in dB for 50% correct performance on the Bamford-Kowal-Bench Speech-in-Noise (BKB-SIN) test, an adaptive test of speech perception in a multitalker babble background.

RESULTS: Aided thresholds for high-frequency stimuli were significantly better when NLFC was enabled, and use of NLFC resulted in significantly better speech recognition in quiet for the UWO Plural Test and for the phonemes /d/ and /s/ on the Phonak Logatome test. There was not a statistically significant difference in performance on the BKB-SIN test between the NLFC enabled and disabled conditions.

CONCLUSIONS: These results indicate that NLFC improves audibility for and recognition of high-frequency speech sounds for children with moderate to moderately severe hearing loss in quiet listening situations.

The Benefits of Nonlinear Frequency Compression for People with Mild Hearing Loss

Conclusion

The main purpose of this study was to examine the benefits of SoundRecover for subjects with a mild hearing loss. Further, with the Adaptive Logatom Test, a sensitive method to measure identification thresholds of high-frequency speech material has been developed. The findings of this study suggest that SoundRecover has the potential to provide substantial improvement in the acquisition and identification of high-frequency speech signals and environmental sounds when compared to conventional high-end digital amplification. In addition to the significant benefits of SoundRecover in test subjects with severe to profound hearing loss, Identification of /s/ sounds have been shown to improve with the use of SoundRecover in cases of mild hearing loss; even when the possibilities of conventional amplification have been fully exhausted. This suggests that understanding speech passages with low loudness predictability is improved since this study showed initial improvements in speech recognition for high-frequency weighted speech materials. Also, detection thresholds for high-frequency inputs were lower, which may result in improved audibility of high-frequency consonants. This type of full-time access to input across the entire speech range is critical for the development of typical speech, language, and auditory skills. Further, test subjects subjectively perceived hearing with SoundRecover as more comfortable than without.

It is concluded that SoundRecover should be considered as an option for subjects with mild to moderately-severe hearing loss. The Adaptive Logatom Test is an important step in finding appropriate methods to evaluate the benefit of hearing instruments in treating mild hearing loss.

Study suggests that non-linear frequency compression helps children with moderate loss

林可能是觉得轻中度听力损失不需要用移频,这个前提是 高频也是轻中度;

Current research suggests that even users of hearing instruments with mild losses find that SoundRecover can provide comfortable listening if the cut-off frequency is set relatively high, above 4 kHz (Boretzki & Kegel, 2009). This is not surprising, because there is little or no harmonic pitch information present in the high frequencies affected by frequency compression with such settings. On the other hand, there is useful information present in some high-frequency sounds, particularly the fricative consonants of speech. It is plausible that the perception of those sounds would be improved by limited application of frequency compression. Even people with normal hearing could theoretically benefit under certain listening conditions. In particular, when using a telephone, which has an upper frequency limit below 4 kHz, it can be difficult to understand unfamiliar words if they contain certain high frequency phonemes. For example, over the telephone /s/ is easily confused with /f/, and in many cases is not audible at all. Under these conditions, some frequency compression above a relatively high cut-off frequency could improve the listener’s ability to hear and to discriminate such speech sounds. Therefore, it is highly likely that SoundRecover, when appropriately fit, could provide benefit to a majority of hearing instrument users.
