For millions of years, nature has continuously evolved, finding solutions to problems that still pose challenges for scientists and engineers—even with the world’s most advanced technology. For example, a single blade of grass is still more stable than any kind of comparable mechanical construction, spiders make thread that is as strong as steel and termites are able to survive in the intense sun by building elaborate airways in the dirt.

In recent times, innovative companies from around the world have used lessons from nature to develop new products, improve current products and find innovative solutions to engineering and design challenges. For example, manufacturers created dirt and water repellent paint after studying the lotus flower, which has a self-cleansing surface. Similarly, a Swiss scientist developed the VELCRO® fastener based on the burrs that covered him and his dog when they returned from a walk in the woods. After studying the burrs under a microscope, he realized that he could create a fabric fastener with the same miniscule hooks that made burrs so effective in sticking to fabric and other materials.

Among hearing system companies, Phonak is leading the way in applying lessons from nature to its new product development work. The company routinely looks to nature for inspiration—a process which Phonak calls “Digital Bionics”. Digital Bionics involves researching the unique capabilities of biological systems related to hearing—specifically, the inner and outer ear and the brain. (After all, there is hardly another acoustic system in the world that is as sophisticated as the human ear.) Its engineers then apply their findings in order to create sophisticated hearing solutions that mimic the natural way humans hear.

The outer ear (the pinna) receives a single sound wave composed of different sounds.

The inner ear (cochlea) analyzes the sound wave and provides the brain with detailed information on the different sounds.

The brain then uses this information to identify and distinguish different waves and listening environments.

Natural localization and orientation:自然定位能力
People who wear hearing systems often complain about problems with localization and orientation—the ability to tell where a sound is coming from. Good localization is important because it helps us monitor what’s going on around us in all directions, as well as determine where we should focus our attention visually. It also plays a key role in providing us with a sense of comfort and security in different environments.
佩戴助听器的人常常抱怨声音定位困难,也就是说,很难区分声音的来源。良好的声音定位能力可以帮助助听器佩戴者察觉周围各个方向的的声音状况,从而决定应将注意力集中在哪个方向。同时,在不同的声音环境中,也带给助听器佩戴者带来安全感和舒适感。
In developing its new generation of hearing systems, Phonak studied how the human outer ear, the pinna, localizes sound. Phonak was then able to mimic the pinna’s functionality electronically within the micro-computer of the Savia hearing system. As a result, people who wear Savia hearing devices are able to localize sounds naturally.
用来在研发新一代的助听系统的时候,峰力认真研究了人的外耳声音定位原理,。Savia助听器就是模拟了耳廓对声音的定位原理。因此,佩戴Savia助听器的用户能够对声音进行自然定位。

Selective amplification, optimal sound quality and
intelligent environment analysis:

Hearing devices help improve communication by amplifying sound. Conventional hearing devices amplify everything—from conversations to background noise to the clock ticking. Sophisticated digital hearing systems have programmable options that automatically adjust the amplification of sound for various listening environments—such as a one-to-one conversation or dinner in a crowded restaurant. This is known as intelligent environment analysis.

Phonak has a long history of studying how the inner ear, the cochlea, functions to analyze and process sounds and how the human brain identifies and distinguishes different sounds and listening environments. This research was used to develop a new generation of hearing systems capable of identifying a greater number of hearing environments more accurately, while providing optimal performance in all sound environments.
